While Bitdefender is known for its security features, users have reported several limitations and challenges when using its products. These issues range from confusing product offerings to complex configurations and inadequate customer support. These limitations were reported by users on the G2 platform:
Confusing product mix: The different versions of Bitdefender’s business security solutions can be misleading. Some users found that the more affordable Small Business Security plan offered better features, such as vpn and mobile device management, which were missing in the more expensive GravityZone plans.
Limited business support: Business customers face slower response times compared to individual users. While home users get phone and chat support, business users must rely on email inquiries, which can take up to 48 hours for a response.
Difficult to configure and manage: The firewall settings can interfere with basic office functions, such as printing. Users have reported struggling to configure networks correctly, with no clear options in the UI to mark a network as trusted rather than public.
Expensive mobile device coverage: Adding mobile device protection in GravityZone is costly, leading some organizations to use alternative security solutions for mobile endpoints. In contrast, the Small Business Security plan includes mobile protection at no extra charge.
Complicated administration interface: The management console is disorganized, making it difficult to locate settings. Users have described the configuration process as unintuitive, requiring unnecessary steps and leading to frustration.
Performance impact: On some systems, Bitdefender can consume a significant amount of RAM, particularly when multiple security modules are enabled. In extreme cases, it can use over 600 MB of RAM, slowing down system performance.
Mac compatibility issues: Many Bitdefender features are Windows-centric, with limited support for macOS. Additionally, Bitdefender does not always follow macOS system standards, and some features break after macOS updates, taking months to be fixed.
Unintuitive user experience (UX/UI): The dashboard can be confusing, displaying vague security scores without clear explanations or straightforward mitigation steps. Users also report difficulties in navigating the settings and configuring security rules.
Challenging uninstallation: If the antivirus has not communicated with the server, the removal tool does not work. Users often need to boot in safe mode and manually edit the registry to uninstall Bitdefender.
Web filtering limitations: Web blocking features do not work properly on terminal servers with multiple users, which can be a major oversight for business environments.
Mobile app restrictions: The mobile security app only works when connected to the work network and requires an on-premises server, making it inconvenient to use remotely. Setup is also complex, requiring significant admin intervention.
